Did you know that some chiropractors adjust more than just your back? In fact, most chiropractors are trained in extremity adjusting in addition to spinal adjustments. Shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles and even the jaw can all be misaligned by the stresses we put ourselves through on a daily basis. Restoring proper alignment to these joints with an adjustment can reduce pain and inflammation and improve function.
If you have ever noticed pain or popping around your jaw, you may have had a TMJ disorder. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, referring to the joint that opens and closes your mouth. Like the joints in your spine, the temporomandibular joint can become misaligned, causing it to track improperly.
Symptoms of a TMJ disorder include:
Pain or tenderness of the jaw
Difficulty chewing
Painful chewing
Locking of the jaw causing difficulty with opening and closing the mouth
TMJ disorders can be caused by teeth grinding or clenching, dental work such as braces, poor posture, stress, and gum chewing. The temporomandibular joint can be adjusted by a chiropractor. By adjusting the TMJ, normal joint motion can be restored, relieving pain and restoring function. This may lesson the need for pain relievers or surgery.
