If you have ever felt off balance as though either you of the world around you was spinning, you may have suffered from vertigo. Vertigo can be a startling and inconvenient symptom for those who have had it. It can be caused by the following:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV, which occurs when tiny calcium particles get clumped within the canals of the inner ear.
Meniere's Disease which is caused by a build-up of fluid in the ear and is usually accompanied by ringing of the ears.
Labyrinthitis, or an inner ear infection that causes inflammation in the inner ear.
Head or neck injury
Migraines
Side effect of certain medications
Brain problem such as tumor or stroke (less frequently)
While vertigo may go away on its own, it is often treated with medications to decrease fluid or inflammation. But did you know that a visit to your chiropractor may help with your dizziness without any side effects?
Adjustments made to the upper cervical vertebra remove interference to the nerves that supply the inner ear. This improves the function of the inner ear which includes proper drainage of the canals. This in turn decreases dizziness.
A positioning maneuver called the Epley Maneuver may also be used if BPPV is suspected. This maneuver helps to reposition any particles within the canal to decrease dizziness.
